Polar bear sow and cubs. Alaska's arctic. Canon 1Ds Mark III, 100-400 f/5.6L IS, 1/800 sec @ f/5.6, ISO 800
Cloudy skies, although not good for aurora, offered some good light for afternoon photography of this family of polar bears. The sow with two cubs take shelter from the winds common to the north coast of Alaska’s arctic. Shooting directly into the wind with lightly blowing snow at temperatures around freezing present some problems with keeping a lens clean.

Awesome!
Cool shot! Was this right on the Arctic Ocean’s beach?
Hey Patrick,
Oh man, I gotta get up there sometime soon and see the polar bears.
Cheers
Carl
Wow! Great shot. Must be a thrilling wildlife experience…
Nice one Patrick. Helps me look forward to my upcoming Churchill trip. And if Carl sees this, what’s up dude? 🙂
I hope you were in the 400 mm end of the lens. Beautiful shot, but how close are you to them?
Awesome shot!
Thanks for the comments guys. The shot wast taken on a barrier island in the arctic, at the 400mm range. Closeness depended on the bear’s activity, but I was on a boat, not on land.
