Polar bear cubs play on the sea ice along the Beuafort Sea, arctic, Alaska. Canon 1Ds Mark III, 500mm f/4L IS w/1.4x, 1/500 sec @ f/5.6, ISO 1000
On the edge of the ice formation in the Beaufort Sea, these two polar bear cubs played in and out of the water. It’s amazing watching them jump directly into the icy water and be so sufficient in both land and sea environments. The photo was taken from some distance, in blowing wind, and if you look at the exif info, light was low and ISO was high. It was one sharp one out of many soft frames. Some on our photo tour group got pictures of the cubs doing swan dives into the water–what was I doing??

Hi Patrick, Just found this site as I was researching info for my pictures. Beautiful picture you have…. Sure enjoyed our trip and now working on the pictures, a wonderful time all over again… Thanks for all your help.. I shall never forget the “check your histogram”. A very good lesson. Now that Kitty and I have warmed up a bit, we were talking about doing this trip again sometime. Now I know why others have done it 4 and 5 times… Wonderful trip… Sure would recommend it… The elementary school kids have sure enjoyed the lessons learned from the pictures.

Marti,
There is nothing like repetition to augment memory. It sure was a great trip, and I’ve yet to get through the images, but look forward to it. I’m glad you were able to rescue yours.
