Walrus off the island shores of Svalbard. Canon 5D Mark II, 100-400mm (260mm) 1/400 sec @f/5.6, ISO 400
The creature I was most intrigued to see on my trip to Svalbard was the walrus on ice. I got half of my hoped for scene, which was the walrus itself, but not hauled out on ice. Still, I had quite an up-close encounter with these giant animals, who exhibited great curiosity and humorous behavior. I took this photo of a relatively young male, while wading in the water along the shore where a few walrus had separated from the larger group on land and were swimming and lounging around in the water.
