Polar bear rests on an island in Alaska’s eastern arctic. Canon 5D Mark III, 500mm f4/L IS II w/1.4x (700mm) 1/320 sec @ f/5.6, ISO 800, hand held.
Polar bears embody a beautiful blend of power and elegance. This is one reason they are so interesting to observe and photograph. And there are few mammal species that move so fluidly both on land and in the water. This bear rested along the shore of an island in the Beaufort Sea, along Alaska’s eastern arctic coast. They are waiting for the ice to freeze so they can return to it and hunt seals. In the meanwhile, they scavenge on marine mammal carcasses or other opportunistic food sources, favoring rich fat above all else.
