Last year author Glen Klinkhart contacted me to license a photo for the cover of a book. I license a number of photos for book covers, but in the end, I don’t up reading many. This particular book struck my interest however, and I’m one quarter into it now. It caught my interest for a few reasons:
- it was a local Alaskan author, and
- it addressed a subject that dealt in some part with young people in risky situations or circumstances.
I’ve been involved with a local nonprofit, Fairbanks Youth Advocates whose mission is to “facilitate life transitions for at-risk youth.” We recently opened a 24/7 emergency shelter in Fairbanks for homeless and runaway teens under 18.
But back to the book… Finding Bethany was written by Glen Klinkhart, a retired police officer from the Anchorage Police Department. This memoir is about his experience as a detective and work in the homicide division. It is not all about young people, but they appear in many situations, and it brings to mind some of the peril that young people face on the street.
The photo selected for the wrap around cover was taken in Denali National Park, and it features the North Face of the Denali. Having worked in design myself, I’m always interested to see the application of a photograph, and its contextual design. Below is a copy of the original image, in comparison with the final layout.
Thanks Glen for an interesting read, for sending me a copy, and for using my photography.
