Photography equipment, gear and technical aspects
Would you like to have your Alaska photos published? Early in my professional photography career, I licensed photos to an Alaskan publishing company that produced (in my opinion) the finest Alaska-themed calendars. A few years ago, I purchased that same company, Greatland Graphics, and have continued the nearly four-decade legacy of licensing photos from Alaska…
The Calypso Orchid May of 2016 in Fairbanks has been a big leap into the Spring season, with early green up and a few days of record temperatures. All of this wonderful weather has no doubt influenced the early blossoms of a beautiful orchid that I spotted while on a trail in the Fairbanks area.…
If you have been on a venture to photograph the northern lights, then you have encountered the challenge of photographing in the dark while still being able to control your camera settings. A headlamp with a red filter can help provide the necessary light to assist with camera adjustments. However, that light can easily find its way into the picture if you are not careful. In order to avoid headlamp light pollution in your aurora photos, see headlamp etiquette practices on my blog article here.
In the field with the Canon 11-24mm f/4L My preference for landscape photography may suggest that acquiring the Canon 11-24mm f/4L would be an easy question for me to answer. The price tag of $3000 slowed me down a bit but I finally bought the lens and had a chance to test it when recently photographing in Utah (Zion National Park) and Arizona…
I’ve been working away on some updates for the eBook I wrote on How to Photograph the Northern Lights. I just released the third version, which jumped from 280 to 319 pages. It is no small task keeping up to date on all the latest models and versions of cameras and lenses, and quite frankly,…
I’m often asked what the correct camera exposure is for the northern lights. And, like many answers to broad questions, the answer could be equally broad due to the many variables involved. However, there are some basic starting points, and I’m including an excerpt here from my eBook on How to Photograph the Northern Lights,…
Being somewhat given to the metrics behind our lives, I usually do a quick analysis of the lenses that I used in the course of a year. 2014 showed quite a change over 2013, as I favored the 24-105mm lens considerably. This was in a large part due to all of the human powered trips…
As the year comes to a close, I’m selling a few lenses that I no longer use. Instead of going to Ebay, I thought I’d post them here first. Both lenses are suitable for aurora photography, so if you are looking for a lens to capture the northern lights, these may work for you. Both…
During an October photo tour that I guide in Alaska’s Arctic, one of my type II flash cards got corrupted during a Lightroom import. I recently received it in the mail from www.datarecovery.com and had a chance to look at the pictures contained within. However, that process did not turn out to be a simple one. When attempting to…
If you follow this blog, you may recall that I had a corrupted flash card from my recent trip in Alaska’s Arctic, and none of the images were accessible. After making a few inquiries upon my return, (thanks to Don Tredennick’s recommendation, one of the guests on the photo tour) I settled on www.datarecovery.com to…
